My Hawaii Trip 2011

#1 Post by NinjaMama » Thu Dec 29, 2011 1:02 pm

Well after a busy couple of months with Curve Unit and some other stressful personal events in my life, a vacation on the Big Island of Hawaii seemed like a good idea.
Vacation slideshows are almost always boring, but if you ever wanted to know what the Big Island was like, here's an overview from Kona to Hilo.

Dana, my friend in Kona, manages a condo unit about a mile from all the downtown businesses and nightlife. It's right on the water and you can watch the sunset from the comfort of the swimming pool. We stayed there for the first 3 days of my visit. Here's a few images from my time in the condo.

After the brief stay in the condo, I stayed most of the rest of the time at Dana's place. It's about 1000 foot elevation up the side of the volcano, in the jungle on an old plantation site. We picked fresh papaya every day, as well as avocado's, macadamia nuts, and a pineapple while I was there. (The banana's weren't ready for picking yet.) The vegetation around her house was very dense and spiders were everywhere. Most were a little "crab-like" thing, but there were these huge spiders with yellow tattoo's that creeped me out. And the gecko's were very cool too.

We decided to go to the Hilo side of the island and stay with some friends there. Ivy and Dick have a beautiful home in Hilo. Their place is just down the road from some beautiful waterfalls.

On our way back from Hilo, we went around the north side of the island. It rained most of the way till we got to the Kona side of the island. We saw some beautiful jungle-type scenery, cool blue waters, and amazing 'rainbows'.

I know this was a bit longwinded, but I hope it convinces some of you to make some time to discover the islands for yourself.
Mahalo for taking the time to view this.
Aloha!

I would love to go sometime - made it to the Caribbean once, but I really do want to go see Hawaii, too. Great pics, thanks so much for sharing - I can see why you like it there so much!

Mahalo for posting those. They made me happy, yet sad 'cause I'm not there now.

Breathtaking!!! I've told myself that Hawaii is over-rated, but when I was looking at your pics I know how wrong I am. I must go!!!

Hawaii is beautiful. Just get into Island Time, relax and don't be in a hurry for anything and you will love it. There's nothing like those tropical trade breezes at sunset and a nice long cool beverage. We were there last 4 years ago this time for our 25th anniversary. Spent time on both Kauaʻi and the Big Island (our favorite.) Save $$ by eating local. Poke and rice, fruit, - save your money for cocktails!!! And there are NO SNAKES!

I actually worked in Honolulu for a couple of weeks way back when. It was awesome. Especially cutting out at 3:00pm for drinks and pupu's cuz everyone on the mainland has left work and won't be calling! Aloha Friday. I would love to retire there too. I'd want to have enough $$ so I can come back to the Bay Area once in a while because this is my home forever.

Love the pictures Sabs!!! Ahhhhh.

If the only place you've been on Hawaii is the typical tourist spots, I can understand you saying that. You've got to wander and explore the island and get away from down-town areas. Hotels are a nice place to have a cocktail and watch the sunset, but if you can find a nice bar that locals hang at you might be able to make yourself a friend. Then when you return to Hawaii, you'll have a place to stay and save a few bucks!
Either that or wait till I move there (in five years) and you can come visit me!

Never been there, but for whatever reason came to that erroneous conclusion. Since I will have completed my schooling and will be working in my field, I most probably will be ready when you move there... so watch out, prepare for a visit from me!! :0}
