Concord motorcyclist dies when big rig cuts across freeways

#1 Post by MistrissKittie » Wed Apr 22, 2009 9:34 am

A Concord motorcyclist died Monday evening when he collided with a big rig that illegally cut across lanes while making a connection between freeways in unincorporated Alameda County, the California Highway Patrol said.

Herbert Saxton Jr., 33, was killed in the crash that occurred about 6 p.m. when the big-rig drove from the right shoulder of eastbound Interstate 580, just past the split with Interstate 205 west of Tracy, across two freeway lanes and into a dirt gore point separating the two freeways, said Officer Steve Creel.

As the truck driver, a 49-year-old man from Bluff City, Tenn., attempted to cross traffic and the gore point, the rig blocked all lanes of I-580 traffic. Saxton, riding his 2008 Yamaha motorcycle in the left lane of I-580, struck the side of the rig and was thrown from the bike. The rig then ran him over, Creel said.

Saxton was gravely injured and died at the scene, Creel said.

The rig driver was not taken into custody, but faces possible criminal charges once an investigation into the fatal accident is complete, Creel said.

That's horrible!
Somewhat of a Deja Vu after JT's accident.
You got to keep an eye out for those big-rigs.
I guess there's something to be said for riding in the fast lane. The big-rigs aren't there.
Ride safe!

That's terrible. RIP, Herbert.
It's not just big rigs that pull that kind of shit. I see cars do it on a daily basis.

I wonder why they didn't take him into custody. Did they test for drugs or alcohol? I don't see any info on that, but it's really strange that a big rig would cut straight across those lanes that way.

I don't understand why the driver wasn't taken into custody either. According to the article it was his negligence that caused the death of someone else. And what was the driver thinking? Despite all the mirrors that big rigs have on them they still have huge blind spots and they just can't maneuver like cars. It's a wonder more people were not hurt.
RIP Herbert & condolences to your family
